"To collaboratively serve our community by providing emergency food, shelter, housing and support in ways that meet immediate needs and respect human dignity."
The following programs were established by the Shalom Center to assist those in need of food, shelter, health care, and educational support and to help these individuals move towards a long-term goal of self-sufficiency.
Daily Soup Kitchen Volunteers and staff prepare and serve a nutritious meal to approximately 110 needy Kenosha children, families and individuals 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The Soup Kitchen is open from 430pm-530pm each day.
Nightly Shelter The Interfaith Network Nightly Shelter (INNS) Program provides temporary emergency nightly shelter for up to 30 homeless persons per night. Those using the program are provided with breakfast in the morning and a sack lunch. This program operates in rotating church sites throughout Kenosha year-round from 7pm – 7am.
Food Pantry The food pantry provides hungry families with emergency food one time per month. Food is distributed to nearly 700 households each month. The food pantry is open from 10am-Noon and from 1pm-3pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Emergency Family Shelter The family shelter offers a safe, secure, stable and supportive environment for adults with dependent children who are experiencing homelessness. It provides a temporary residence and a full array of services to assist families in returning to a permanent living situation.
Families in the shelter receive daily support along with classes and trainings in family dynamics, job searches, budgeting and nutrition (to name but a few). They also receive individual case management to develop and implement a plan of action to move toward self-sufficiency.
The shelter can accommodate 7 families (28 individuals) for 30- 45 days.
K-12 students who are in the family shelter are provided with tutoring and enrichment in an on-site after-school classroom. This program is offered in conjunction with the Kenosha Unified School District.
